Keep Weight Training While Playing Sports

24 November 2010 No Comment

Many feel that weight training is for the “off season”, while during season, regardless of what sport we’re talking about, should be limited to conditioning and sports specific training.  Is that so?  What happens to your body composition when you give lifting weights the back seat?

According to Muscle and Fitness, “…make sure you don’t ditch your weight training in the process.  UK researchers studied the changes in body composition of 28 English Super League rugby players and found that from the beginning to the end of the competitive season (February through September), the ruggers’ lean muscle mass decreased significantly on average while bodyfat percentage increased.  Talk about the worst of both worlds.  The scientists concluded that the “coaching and strength and conditioning staff should aim to prescribe appropriate training and nutritional practices to maintain the players’ optimal body compositions.”  In other words, hit the weights…in season.”

Yes, stick to maintaining or increasing strength, using good, solid basic equipment like chinup bars and a dumbbell set.
